Twice each year, we arrive at one of the oldest and most meaningful moments in the Earth's annual cycle: the solstice.
Whether you are celebrating the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere or the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the solstice reminds us that we are participants in a much larger rhythm—one measured not by calendars or deadlines, but by the movement of the sun itself.
Long before modern clocks and schedules, people across cultures looked to the solstices to understand time. These celestial turning points marked the beginning of harvests, periods of rest, communal celebrations, and sacred ceremonies honoring the relationship between the Earth, the Sun, and all living things.
In this episode of The Herbal Almanac, we explore the cultural, historical, and energetic significance of the solstice and the wisdom it offers us today.
Together we reflect on how herbalism naturally reconnects us to seasonal living and the understanding that every season carries its own unique medicine.
This episode also introduces three herbs that beautifully embody the spirit of the solstice:
St. John's Wort, traditionally gathered near midsummer and long associated with sunlight, protection, and emotional resilience.
Calendula, a radiant solar herb celebrated for its vibrant blossoms, gentle healing qualities, and reminder to turn toward the light.
Rose, whose medicine invites us to cultivate tenderness, gratitude, and an open heart even during seasons of great abundance or profound stillness.
To close our time together, I offer a guided Solstice Meditation centered on connecting with the warmth, generosity, and sustaining light of the sun. Rather than striving for more, this meditation invites us to simply receive—to remember that, like the plants, we grow best when rooted in the Earth while remaining open to the light above.
Throughout the episode, I also share portions of the herbal manuscripts available inside the Lunar Herbal Alchemy Circle. These manuscripts are part of our growing seasonal herbal library, where members explore medicinal plants through botanical history, herbal energetics, traditional uses, preparation methods, harvesting guidance, and the rhythms of the lunar cycle.
My hope is that this episode serves as a gentle reminder that herbalism is more than a collection of remedies. It is a way of returning to relationship—with the seasons, with the plants, with our own bodies, and with the timeless rhythms that have guided humanity for generations.
However you are honoring the solstice, may it be a moment to pause, to give thanks, and to welcome the season ahead with intention and openness.
Love and Blessings,
Lisa Marie
